Author and sales expert Anthony Iannorino takes a deep dive into the neuroscience behind how a negativity fast works in his book, The Negativity Fast. It’s a great read, but much longer than this blog post!

Here are 5 steps to get you started on reducing negativity so you can reap the benefits and feel more positive right away.

  1. The first step is to identify the sources of negativity in your life. Take a moment to audit your life without judgment and make a list of the negative influences. These can be things that trigger you or people you hang out with who bring you down.

  2. The second step is to decide how long you want to fast from negativity. This can be seven days, a month, or even just 24 hours. Choose a duration that you can commit to and feel good about.

  3. The third step is to decide which negative influences you're going to remove. The goal isn't to eliminate all negativity from your life, but to reduce it and create space for positivity. Start small by choosing one source

  4. Step four is to decide what positive you will use to replace the negative influence. For example, instead of watching an hour-long news program, try listening to a 10-minute daily news podcast.

  5. It's important to keep a journal throughout your negativity fast to track the impact it has on your mood and overall well-being. Approach this with compassion and curiosity, and don't beat yourself up if you slip up. Just start again where you left off.
